Scottish comedian Janey Godley shares ‘devastating’ health update

Comedian and actor Jane Godley has shared “devastating” news from her hospital bed, prompting famous friends to express their heartache.

Beloved comedian and actor Janey Godley has confirmed she is set to receive end-of-life hospice care.

The Scottish star, 63, admitted that she’s “near the end” of her years-long battle with ovarian cancer in a heartbreaking video shared to X from her hospital bed.

Godley was last week forced to cancel her upcoming tour ‘Why Is She Still Here?’ after she was readmitted to hospital with sepsis.

And in a heartbreaking update, Godley revealed that the chemotherapy had reached its course, and she was now “out of options”.

“So I’m now in palliative care and I’m at end-of-life care now in the hospital,” she began her video.

“The chemo ran out of options and I just couldn’t take any more of it, and the cancer has spread.

“So it looks like this will be getting to near the end of it, and it’s really difficult to speak about this and say to people.”

The actor and comedian posted a video from her hospital bed.

Godley went on to thank the National Health Service (NHS) and those who have cared for her, as well as her family, friends and fans for their support.

The funny-woman found viral fame on social media with her dubbed parodies of former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid-19 news briefings during the pandemic.

Sturgeon was one of the many people sharing well wishes to Godley in response to the post.

“Sending you so much love, my friend. You are an inspiration,” she wrote.

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson added, “Oh Janey, this is heartbreaking. Thank you for all you’ve given the world – and for being you.”

Australian comedian and actor Magda Szubanski said, “Oh Janey darlin. I’m so sorry my love. Sending you so much love and strength and gratitude for bringing hilarity to the world.”

US actor Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, wrote, “Sending you much love & best wishes always, Janey.”

Godley pictured recently with legendary UK actor Miriam Margolyes.

Godley’s condition had been managed through NHS treatment over the last few years, but her health took a turn for the worst in recent weeks.

In the video, Godley added, “It is devastating news to know that I’m facing end-of-life, but we all come to an end sometime.

“I want to thank everybody for supporting the family, especially (her daughter) Ashley and my husband.

“The overwhelming support has been amazing, and I don’t know how long I’ve got left before anybody asks, so I just want you to know that I appreciate all the love you’ve gave me and all the support. Cancer affects two in one people, and it’s affected me.”

The comedian thanked her beloved daughter Ashley Storrie.

She wished everyone a lovely Christmas and said she hopes to be here for it, too.

The comedian also sent her “love and support to everybody else out there who’s living with a life-limiting disease”.

Born in poverty in Glasgow in 1961, Godley went on to become a regular co-presenter on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends, as well as fronting BBC Radio 4 series The C Bomb.

The comedian was photographed at Turnberry golf resort with her infamous “unwelcome” sign for Donald Trump in 2016.

In 2023, Godley became the winner of the inaugural Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival.
