‘Sir Becks’: King Charles set to knight David Beckham

A prestigious title David Beckham was nominated for nearly 15 years ago is finally about to become a reality for the soccer star.

David Beckham to officially be knighted by King Charles

David Beckham will soon become Sir David when he is awarded a knighthood, British media have reported.

The 50-year-old football champion will be given the title as part of King’s Birthday Honours which will be revealed in the UK next week.

His wife and former Spice Girl Victoria, 51, will become Lady Beckham.

It’s no secret that the former England and Manchester United legend has a close relationship with the royal family and was last year announced as an ambassador of King Charles’s charitable body, The King’s Foundation.

Beckham received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2003 from the late Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his services to football and has for years been strongly tipped to receive a knighthood.

The father-of-four, nicknamed ‘Golden Balls’, just last month attended the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in central London and was seen speaking with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

In London’s The Sun newspaper on Friday, it’s frontpage ran a photograph of Beckham with the headline, “Arise Sir Becks” and said calls “have finally been answered after years of waiting” for the football star to receive a knighthood.

In 2011 Beckham was first nominated for a knighthood but this was stopped after he was caught in a tax avoidance scheme alongside many well-known personalities.

Beckham has been previously embroiled in controversy after he allegedly labelled the Honours Committee “unappreciative c***s” after he was overlooked for receiving a knighthood.

In 2017, after expletive-ridden emails were leaked revealing his outrage at being previously snubbed, he said he was just a “normal person” who was “extremely disappointed” after failing to receive the prestigious title.

Beckham’s love for the royal family made worldwide headlines in 2022 after he famously spent 12 hours queuing to pay his respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Hall at the House of Parliament in front of her coffin lying in state.

At the time he told the media: “I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way, so if my grandparents would have been here today, I know that they would have wanted to be here,” he said.

“It’s a sad day but it’s a day for us to remember the incredible legacy she’s left.”

Beckham retired from professional football in 2013 and it was recently reported that he has a $865m empire and has a long list of lucrative deals with brands including Adidas, Armani, Nespresso, Tudor Watches and Hugo Boss.

In 2024 he visited the royal estate, Highgrove Gardens at Gloucestershire in the UK, and met with His Majesty to learn about the King’s Foundation and understand the work that is done by the charity including holding specialist workshops on site.

But it’s not all roses for Beckham, his family has been making headlines recently after a reported family rift with eldest son Brooklyn, 26, and his wife, actress Nicola Peltz, 30.
