Prince Louis will turn six on April 23 and just like in previous years, his mum, Princess Catherine, will try and make the day as special as possible for him, following a touching tradition.
After kissing goodnight to Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and brother Prince Louis, she is likely to spend the evening in the kitchen baking a special birthday cake for her youngest.
Back in 2019, Catherine appeared in Mary Berry’s A Berry Royal Christmas and revealed that she “loves” making her children’s birthday cakes from scratch – and it’s now become somewhat of a household tradition.
“It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much,” she said. “But I love it,” she added,” according to The Sun.
And with her daughter Charlotte’s ninth birthday just one week later on May 2, it’s likely she’ll be keeping herself busy in the kitchen.
Royal correspondent Danielle Stacey told Hello magazine: “The Princess of Wales’s number one priority has always been her children since becoming a mother and she has been supporting George, Charlotte and Louis through all their major milestones, including George’s first big exams last year.
“We’ve seen the Princess take some incredibly fun and playful portraits of her children over the years and baking their birthday cakes so she’s likely to feel that it’s important to keep those traditions going to maintain a sense of normality.”
Prince Louis’ birthday comes just weeks after Catherine released a heartfelt video announcing to the world that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing “preventative chemotherapy”.
It comes as the Princess of Wales, 42, is keen to ensure there is little disruption to Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis and will manage their day-to-day lives out of the public eye, with as much continuity as possible during her recovery.
The Wales’s have limited their overseas tours to short trips so they are not away from the children for long periods.
William, palace sources say, will not be going abroad for work in the next few months.
The couple are understood to have taken child psychologists’ and medical experts’ advice on how to inform the children their mother has cancer in the days before going public with her diagnosis.
“They were told to tell the children with honesty to alleviate any stress of illness. Honesty is the best policy in this situation,” a palace source said.
“They were told to tell the children exactly what this means. It’s a personal moment for the Wales’s and their family.”
The princess revealed in her televised recording aired on Friday it had been “an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family.”
Catherine said in her televised message: “Most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”
The family take part in a range of sports, with Catherine enjoying cold water swimming and the children doing everything from triathlons to ballet lessons.
The Princess of Wales was seen last weekend cheering on the children from the sidelines at a sporting event in Windsor and has told friends “everything we have been doing will continue in as far as I am able.”
She is aware of the children’s different personalities and how they will cope and has always encouraged them to be emotionally communicative.
Speaking in 2017, she said: “We hope to encourage [our children] to speak about their feelings.”
She added: “I’ve got such fond memories of being in the garden and being outside from my own childhood, and I’m sharing that with my own children at the moment.”
She previously said on an appearance on brother in law Mike Tindall’s podcast The Good & The Rugby in 2023, that the children were “growing and trying out different sports.”
“They’re obviously still really young. It’s going to be interesting to see how that grows and develops.”
Catherine has called on the support of her family during the next few months as she undergoes preventive chemotherapy.
Her mother Carole and father Michael Middleton, who live a 40-minute drive away in Bucklebury, southwest England, have been focusing on the children and spending increasing time with the family at their home in Adelaide Cottage, Windsor.
Catherine’s sister Pippa and brother James have also pledged their support.
“Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too,” her brother James, 36, said on social media.
The Middleton family is also offering emotional support to William as he attempts to take the burden off his wife.
