Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been spotted enjoying a luxurious, child-free getaway at a Caribbean island regularly frequented by celebrities.
In a picture taken by a fellow holiday-maker and published in the Daily Mail, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex held hands as they strolled along the paved promenade next to the marina on Canouan Island in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The “affectionate” couple appeared to have just exited a gourmet food store inside the Sandy Lane Yacht Club and Marina in Glossy Bay, and it’s understood they were without their two young children, Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2.
“They looked happy. As Harry walked out of the shop, he slightly bumped into one of the barrels [outside] and they both giggled and Meghan reached for his hand,” the onlooker told the Mail.
“They just looked very happy to be having a holiday together.”
Canouan – a tiny, secluded patch of land measuring only 5.6km by 2km – has been described as the place “where billionaires go to escape millionaires” and has previously boasted high-profile guests including George and Amal Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert Downey Jr.
While it’s unclear which of the few lavish accommodation options Harry and Meghan selected for their stay, the island features a branch of Soho House, with which the duchess has a long association.
She’s been friends with the club chain’s Chief Membership Officer, Markus Anderson, for many years, and it’s believed to have been Anderson who arranged a private room at London’s Soho House for her first date with Harry.
Meghan later had her hen’s night at Soho Farmhouse in the UK ahead of their 2018 royal wedding.
Harry and Meghan’s luxury holiday comes just weeks after they undertook a “mega-secret operation” to visit his cousin, Princess Eugenie, in Portugal following the Invictus Games.
The event wrapped up on September 16, and according to Portuguese magazine Nova Gente, the pair made a detour to luxury resort in Melides, where Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, have a home.
Jack – who shares children August, 2, and Ernest, four months, with Eugenie – works in marketing and sales for the Discovery Land Company, based in the region.
“[Harry and Meghan] arrived in Portugal without their children and as soon as they landed, they headed to Alentejo and more precisely to Melides,” the Portuguese publication reported this week.
Local witnesses claim the couple left Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport on a British Airways flight to Heathrow – en route to Los Angeles – on September 20 to be reunited with their children.
“After the Invictus Games finished, on Saturday, September 16, the couple headed to our country for a lightning trip,” Nova Gente reported.
“And with the reserve that has characterised them since they abdicated their royal duties in 2020, Meghan and Harry preferred not to publicise, either through the press or through their social networks, this ‘romantic getaway’.”
