Meghan Markle’s Suits co-star has revealed why the Duchess turned down the offer to join the cast reunion at the Golden Globes.
Stars of the hit series, which is currently experiencing a major streaming resurgence on Netflix, gathered on stage during Monday’s ceremony to present the award for best TV drama, but without Meghan.
US actress Gina Torres — who played Jessica Pearson — told Variety on the red carpet that the cast members have a show-centric group chat and the actors are “all texting each other.”
But when asked why royal mum-of-two Meghan was absent and if they had “texted” her to join them, she said: “We don’t have her number.”
“We just don’t. So she’ll see, she’ll watch. She’ll be happy that we’re here [at the award show].”
The Duchess of Sussex played paralegal Rachel Zane on Suits for seven seasons, but left in 2017 after she started dating Prince Harry.
Despite her exit, she stayed close with her former co-stars in the years that followed, even inviting them to her Windsor Castle wedding in 2018.
The Suits cast reunion rumour was sparked by Patrick J. Adams, who played Meghan’s love interest Michael Ross, and Gabriel Macht after they were named as presenters at the ceremony.
The former Suits stars’ inclusion gave fans hope Meghan could make a surprise appearance as well.
And while the Duchess of Sussex did not attend this year’s ceremony, it is understood that she was invited. Speaking to Page Six, a source alleged that the Duchess of Sussex was invited to the event, but “unfortunately” wasn’t able to make an appearance because of other plans.
Adams instead praised his former co-star on the red carpet and said: “I think Meghan is a fantastic actress so we’d be lucky to have her back in the industry,” he said.
When asked if he would do a Suits reboot or spin-off, he added: “Let’s go, I’m ready. Mike and Rachel in Seattle.”
In September, the actor also shared a number of unseen photos from his time with Meghan on set, which fuelled rumours of a new season.
The snaps included the former actress lying seductively on the set floor and lounging on a sofa in a pair of stilettos, with Adams saying he “misses his friends”.
He also included a number of black-and-white portrait-style shots of the rest of the cast, including Meghan’s friend and co-star Sarah Rafferty, who starred as legal secretary Donna.
Meghan herself weighed in on the show’s surging popularity, years after its finale aired, at a Variety event in Hollywood last November.
“Isn’t that wild?” she said, in response to news it had attracted a combined 45 billion minutes streamed across its platforms.
She admitted she had “no idea” what sparked the renewed interest, but gushed over the “great cast and crew”.
The creator of the hit show Aaron Korsh said in August that if a Suits revival was on the cards he would “consider” it if he had an idea and “the cast was into it:”
But he added on X: “Let me say right off that there is no #Suits reboot or anything in the works.”
