Prince Harry and Meghan Markle included in the official coronation programme

She may not be at King Charles’ historic day but the Duchess of Sussex has not been left out of the occasion completely.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been included in the official programme for King Charles’ coronation, despite the LA-based royal missing out on the historic occasion.

The 84-page official souvenir, which costs $37, features a full-page photo of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex alongside King Charles, Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children.

The photo, taken in 2018 to mark the King’s 70th birthday, is included despite the fact Ms Markle will not be in attendance – instead opting to stay at home in California for her son Archie’s birthday.

In the program, Archbishop Justin Welby said King Charles will swap his “robes of status and honour” for a simple white shirt for the private anointing during the May 6 ceremony.

The King’s anointing is the only part of the ceremony the public will not see and will be a “private moment between a new King and the King of Kings”, the Archbishop said.

The Archbishop said the King will come before God as a servant “in the full knowledge that the task is difficult and he needs help”.

“In the full knowledge that even as a King, he is one of the people and that even if he has a particular role to fulfil, he shares in our human frailties and vulnerabilities,” he said.

Buckingham Palace last week announced that Prince Harry will be part of the congregation inside Westminster Abbey to witness King Charles and Queen Camilla being crowned.

“Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6,” the Palace said in a statement.

“The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”

Seventy years after Coronation Chicken was created for Elizabeth II’s coronation, Charles and Camilla selected a personal favourite as their recommended dish for Coronation Big Lunches.

The recipe is by royal head chef Mark Flanagan and features spinach, broad beans and tarragon.

FOREIGN ROYALS TO ATTEND PALACE RECEPTION

Further details also emerged about the celebrations, with the eve of the coronation set to be marked by a glittering Buckingham Palace reception attended by foreign royalty.

Princess Beatrix, the former queen of the Netherlands, has confirmed her attendance at the event, expected to be hosted by Charles, alongside her granddaughter and heir to the Dutch throne Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands will not be among the guests, who are likely to include presidents and prime ministers from across the globe, but will be at Westminster Abbey to see Charles and Camilla crowned.

MEGHAN ‘SEETHING’ OVER CORONATION RULES

The Duchess of Sussex has turned down the coronation for fear of being “overshadowed” on King Charles III’s big day and is said to be seething that she and the Duke have been banned from the Palace balcony appearance.

The Sussex Squad have insisted Meghan Markle took one for the team for fear of overshadowing what Prince Harry has described as the biggest day of his father’s life.

But more objective observers point to even greater fears about being placed in the cheap seats alongside their fellow non-working royal, the Duke of York.

“Meghan is terrified she’ll be overshadowed at the coronation, she won’t completely dominate it, as it’s the King’s most important day, but she knows not making the balcony, or getting placed in Westminster Abbey next to Prince Andrew and the non-working royals is not a good look,” said royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.

“Everyone knows what Meghan wants, Meghan gets, and she would only have come if it suited her.

“She doesn’t want to be in the background and be upstaged by the coronation, it’s not her style; that’s why she’s turned it down.”

“And she can’t handle not being on the balcony with the King and Queen, while Prince William and Kate are waving to the crowds,” Mr Fitzwilliams added.

“Exclusion is not something Meghan, nor Harry do well.”

The Sussexes have known for months that Prince Harry would attend the May 6 ceremony without his wife who will stay in Montecito to host their son Archie’s fourth birthday party.

The Duchess made very clear what she thought about curtsying to Queen Elizabeth II in the couple’s Netflix documentary. She’s unlikely to be any more keen on the idea of bending the knee and bowing her head to her enemy Catherine, the Princess of Wales.

“The sister in laws dislike each other, god forbid Meghan has to bow to her on the day of the coronation – of course she was always going to stay away,” Mr Fitzwilliams said.

“Harry was always going to go on their behalf so the two of them can remain relevant royals.”
