King and Prince Harry have first meeting since Queen’s funeral

‘Very fleeting’: Prince Harry’s meeting with King Charles ‘speaks volumes’ about diagnosis

Prince Harry has had an emotional reunion with his father King Charles, the first time he has spent with the monarch since the Queen’s funeral in September 2022.

The Duke of Sussex made the 10-hour transatlantic dash from his home in Los Angeles to Clarence House in London for the brief meeting, cut short due to the king feeling weary from a hospital procedure the previous day.

While Harry saw his father at his coronation nine months ago the pair had not spent any time together since Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022.

The short meeting between Charles and his youngest son has raised hopes the pair will be reconciled despite their troubled relationship.

“If you didn’t know what was the matter, you wouldn’t have any idea that he had any condition at all,” a palace source told the British press of the reunion that he said lasted about 30 minutes. They added both the king and Queen Camilla were “coping magnificently”.

After the meeting, the king and queen retired to Sandringham estate where the palace said he is expected to spend a lot of his time recuperating.

As the pair left Clarence House for Buckingham Palace to board a helicopter for the short hop to the Norfolk country estate, King Charles waved and smiled at well wishers.

It was the first time the king had been seen in public since his cancer diagnosis on Monday.

Prior to the public announcement of the discovery of a cancer found during the king’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, the king rang Harry with the news. The king then immediately began treatment.

But while King Charles and his son look to mend their rift, any suggestions about Harry catching up with his brother Prince William were dashed with the palace confirming “it is not in his diary”.

“The prince’s main focus is for his wife, who is recovering from surgery, his three children, and now his father,” a royal source told the UK’s Mirror.

“There are no plans for Harry’s visit to act as some kind of vehicle for reconciliation,”

Harry’s controversial memoir Spare further damaged his ties with his father and brother, making claims William physically attacked him, the King put his own interests above Harry’s and was jealous of the Duchess of Sussex.

Meanwhile, Prince William will on Thursday carry out his first official engagement since his father’s diagnosis and his wife Kate, the Princess of Wales, underwent surgery.

The inclusion in his diary was a departure from previous advisories that he would remain by his wife’s side while she recuperated from abdominal surgery.

William, 41, is to perform an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle after temporarily stepping back from his royal role three weeks ago to juggle caring for his wife and their children following Kate’s operation.

It is understood he is likely to undertake some duties on behalf of his father while Charles undergoes treatment, in addition to his own diary of engagements.

Kate left hospital last Monday and returned to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to be reunited with her children after undergoing planned abdominal surgery on January 16 at the London Clinic.

The confirmation of William’s return to official engagements will be seen as an attempt to signal stability within the monarchy despite the difficult times facing the royals.

The prince’s investiture at Windsor – which is one of his own regular duties – will include a gong for former England footballer Ellen White. William, who is president of the Football Association, will make the record-scoring Lioness an MBE for services to football.

In the evening, William will attend the gala fundraising dinner for London’s Air Ambulance Charity in central London in his role as the organisation’s patron.

Queen Camilla was also preparing to play a critical fill in for her husband with a full program of public duties as was the 73-year-old Princess Royal Anne.
