Given the shock experienced by many as they watched the Princess of Wales’ emotional cancer announcement, it was easy to miss a subtle feature in the background of the video.
Kate, 42, bravely shared the devastating news of her diagnosis on Friday, UK time, in a video shot by the BBC two days earlier.
During the two-minute speech, she was seated on a wooden garden bench, and behind her was a blurred sea of golden daffodils – a symbol of “hope” long associated with cancer patients and survivors, as pointed out by The Sun’s royal photographer, Arthur Edwards.
It was especially poignant, given it is Wales’ national flower.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding while I have been recovering from surgery,” the princess said in the video.
“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.”
Toward the end, Kate offered a message of support to others impacted by cancer.
“At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer,” she said candidly.
“For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
New details about the planning of Friday’s bombshell announcement emerged earlier this week, with The Sun’s editor, Victoria Newton, telling BBC1 that Kate had made the decision to go public some time ago.
“It was actually, I understand, that the princess made the decision two weeks ago that she was going to do this public statement,” she told the program.
“The key thing for her as a mother, the priority was protecting those three children. She didn’t want them going to school, being asked even more than they already were.”
And while senior members of the royal family generally rely on guidance from their aides for their public addresses, it’s been claimed that Kate wrote “every word” of the deeply personal speech by herself.
“She wrote the words herself, delivered it personally and wanted to decide when the time was right to hit the world with this news,” a source told People magazine.
Another source told the publication that William is “extremely proud” of Kate for the courage and strength she has shown not just this week, but since her surgery in January.”
