Sarah Ferguson has told friends she feels “very lucky to be alive” after a gruelling eight-hour breast cancer operation.
The Duchess of York is said to be in good spirits and recovering well after spending four days in intensive care following her ordeal, The Sun reports.
Sources said Fergie’s health battle was “more involved than people think” and daughter Eugenie has moved in to Royal Lodge to care for her.
It is believed the Duchess needed around-the-clock monitoring after the anaesthetic took its toll during the surgery, The Sun reports.
She is now back home after being discharged from the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone.
“The surgery took getting on for eight hours and was more involved than people think,” a friend told The Sun.
“Today, the message she wants to get out is that she’s very grateful and she feels very lucky to be alive.
“She wants to thank the two incredible surgeons Christine Choy and Stuart James who saved her life and all the medical team who worked tirelessly to help her.”
The Duchess of York is being supported by former husband Prince Andrew and King Charles has written to send his “sincere wishes for a speedy recovery”.
In an emotional Instagram post last week, Fergie thanked supporters for the outpouring of kindness she has received after revealing her shock breast cancer diagnosis.
“Thank you so much for such kindness and support,” she said, with a prayer emoji against the backdrop of flowers.
