Danish royal family: Princess Mary and Prince Frederik’s twins celebrate 13th birthday

Barely a week before Prince Frederik and Princess Mary become King and Queen, their carbon copy twin children have entered their teenage years. See the new photo of the 13 year olds.

Rumours Queen Margrethe abdicated to save her son’s marriage an ‘interesting question’

Barely a week before the Danish throne changes hands, two younger members of the royal family have taken centre stage with the palace releasing new pictures of twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine who turn 13 on Monday.

The twins are grandchildren of retiring Queen Margrethe II, who announced her abdication on New Year’s eve. The outgoing Queen recently also made headlines by announcing four of her grandchildren - the sons and daughters of younger son Prince Joachim – were to be stripped of their royal titles and no longer be princes and princesses.

The royal house published a new picture of the smiling siblings, looking every inch a carbon copy of their parents, Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederick, as they enter their teenage years.

The Crown Prince couple’s two youngest children were born 26 minutes apart on 8 January 2011 at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and have courted popularity in the last few years among the Danes.

Last year, Princess Josephine made her debut as an actress in the story of Peter Pan in the Glass Hall in Tivoli in Copenhagen and was listed as Josephine Sophia Ivalo on the cast list for her role as one of the populous who live on Wish Island with the mermaids.

Her brother Prince Vincent is a keen runner taking part in royal fun runs through Copenhagen, winning over his older brother HRH Prince Christian and his father in the 10km run from Copenhagen to Frederiksberg in just 47 minutes last year.

Their royal highnesses are the youngest children of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.

The pair were baptised when they were three months old on April 14, 2011, as Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander and Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda, at the Church of Holmen in a dual ceremony.

The name Frederik was chosen in honour of Vincent’s father, Crown Prince Frederik, following the Danish royal tradition that sees all future kings named either Frederik or Christian. Josephine’s middle name Mathilda was a tribute to Princess Mary’s Australian heritage.

The twins won over the hearts of Australians when their mother took them to Admiralty House in Sydney on a visit to see family in 2011.

In 2020, they joined their elder siblings at the Lemania-Verbier International School in Switzerland, where they were set to undertake a 12-week study programme before covid struck and they undertook remote learning.

They speak French, English and Danish and live with their family at two Danish royal residences, the Amalienborg in Copenhagen and in the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace.
