Princess Anne has left hospital after she was rushed in for treatment following a concussion

The Princess Royal has returned home from hospital after an incident with a horse on her estate left the 73-year-old concussed.

Princess Anne has been discharged after she was rushed to hospital to be treated for a concussion.

The 73-year-old has been in hospital since suffering the injury, thought to be from a horse kick or head, on Sunday evening local time.

She has not been able to remember any detail about the incident at her home at Gatcombe Park estate.

Following her return home on Friday morning, the King’s sister is not expected to return to public duties until doctors give her the all-clear.

On Thursday, her husband gave an update on his wife’s condition saying “she’ll be out [of hospital] when she’s ready.”

Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence made similar comments to reporters earlier this week when he visited his wife on Tuesday.

“She is recovering well, thank you. We are both profoundly grateful to the medical team and hospital support staff for their expert care – and to the emergency services who were all so wonderful at the scene,” he said.

“We are both deeply touched by all the kind messages we have received from so many people near and far. It means a great deal,” he added.

He was seen earlier arriving at the main entrance of her hospital at lunchtime carrying a cool bag for his wife containing “just a few little treats from home”, according to the UK’s Telegraph.

The Princess Royal, a keen horsewoman who competed in equestrian events at the 1972 Olympics, was walking on her Gloucestershire estate when the incident happened.

Emergency services were dispatched to the estate and, after medical care at the scene, the princess was transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for appropriate tests, treatment and observation with Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence at her side.

Following the incident, Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Princess Royal has sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening.

“Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.”

On Tuesday Prince William greeted Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako at their hotel in London. 

Although the Princess of Wales joined the royal family at Trooping the Colour on June 15 in her first public appearance in six months, the outing did not signal a return to royal work and public life.

Neither she nor Princess Anne, are expected to be present for the week-long state visit.

The Princess Royal was due to attend the banquet this evening but has pulled out on doctors’ medical advice.
