An image of Macaulay Culkin hugging his former on-screen mum, Catherine O’Hara, is going viral – and making everyone feel uncomfortably old.
Former child actor Culkin, 43, was finally awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and who better to be there than O’Hara, who played his mum in the iconic 1990 Christmas film Home Alone.
The pair made the movie over 30 years ago and O’Hara gave a sweet speech about Culkin, calling him “darling baby” before joking he should be given a chair so he could relax while people said nice things about him.
“Home Alone will always be a beloved sensation, and the reason it is, is because of Macaulay Culkin,” she said.
O’Hara said that while he did have a great script and a wonderful director, Culkin’s performance made the film.
“I know you worked really hard, but you made acting look like the easiest thing in the world today,” she gushed.
O’Hara described him as the “dearest thing” and also said his sense of humour was a huge credit to him. She added that she was proud of him.
One adorable snap has been taken of O’Hara and Culkin sharing a hug, and for plenty of fans, it feels like a throwback – people have been comparing it to that iconic scene at the end of Home Alone, when O’Hara, playing Culkin’s mum, is reunited with him after accidentally leaving him behind.
“Heart-warming,” one commenter wrote
“This is amazing,” another shared.
“Awwwww, I love this moment and the nostalgia of it,” one praised.
“I felt goosebumps,” another admitted.
Fans were also quick to point out that seeing the pair together, years later, was also making them, well, aware of their age.
“I feel old,” one joked.
“They look great but man oh man... we are getting old,” one mused.
“Times flies,” another shared.
Culkin also gave a beautiful shout-out to his fiancee, former Disney star Brenda Song, 35, with whom he shares two young sons.
“You’re my champion. You’re the only person happier for me today than I am. You’re not only the best woman I’ve ever known, you’re the best person I’ve ever known,” he said.
Culkin explained that she’d given him a “purpose” and he was incredibly thankful to her and their family.
“You’ve given me just all my purpose. You’ve given me family. And after the birth of our two boys, you’ve become one of my three favourite people. You’re somewhere in there,” he said.
Seth Green, Natasha Lyonne, Paris Jackson and Culkin’s siblings Rory and Quinn Culkin were also there to support him.
Culkin was among the most famous child stars of the nineties, and starred in a slew of hits, including Home Alone, My Girl, Richie Rich and Uncle Buck.
As an adult, he has remained far more mysterious and has dabbled in acting, most recently by starring in American Horror Story, but has also lived a very private life.
His biggest brushes with fame since his childhood stardom were when he dated Mila Kunis for almost a decade. That was back before her film career took off, and she was appearing on That 70s Show.
