Actress Lily-Rose Depp has made a rare comment about her famous father, Johnny Depp, days after he received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 59-year-old actor made a triumphant return to acting in his new film, Jeanne du Barry, in which he plays King Louis XV. The movie premiered at the famed festival in France on May 16 and received a seven-minute standing ovation after its screening.

Johnny, who attended the event – his first red carpet appearance since his messy divorce and legal battle with ex Amber Heard – was humbled by the applause.

And no one could be prouder than his daughter, Lily-Rose.

“I’m super happy for him. I’m super excited,” the 23-year-old told Entertainment Tonight. “And it’s so awesome that we get to do projects that we’re super proud of.”

Lily-Rose also received praised for her new show, The Idol. The actress stars in the sexy new Binge series alongside The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – and both scored a standing at Cannes too.

The duo walked the red carpet before the first two episodes of the show aired for festival-goers, who then gave their performance a five-minute standing ovation.

In the series, which premieres on Binge on June 5, Lily-Rose plays a troubled pop star gunning to make a comeback when she embarks on a complex relationship with self-help guru and nightclub promoter Tedros, played by The Weeknd in his acting debut.

The Idol has been surrounded by controversy after its creator Sam Levinson – the same mastermind behind the Binge show, Euphoria – took over from director Amy Seimetz last year.

Since Mr Levinson’s appointment, 13 anonymous cast and crew members have expressed their discomfort to Rolling Stone with claims the new creative direction is sexually “disturbing”.

Johnny is no stranger to controversy himself. The 59-year-old has kept a relatively low profile since his actress wife, Heard, filed for divorce in 2016 and accused him of domestic violence.

The Aquaman actress then wrote an op-ed about Johnny in The Washington Post in 2018 where she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse”.

The essay pushed Johnny to file a $US50 million ($A76 millions) defamation case against her and she then countersued him for $US100 million ($A153 million) after his lawyer called her accusations a hoax.

Following a high-profile trial from April to June last year, both parties were found liable by the jury – Amber was ordered to pay Johnny $15 million ($A22 million) while he was ordered to pay her $2 million ($A3 million) in damages.
