McMahon’s last public appearance came four months before his sad passing.
The actor joined Nicolas Cage at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, to promote their new movie, The Surfer.
The psychological thriller was to be the actor’s last movie, which was shot in Western Australia in 2023.
In the film, Cage plays a title character who returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But conflict ensues when he is met by a group of locals who don’t like visitors using their beach – among them McMahon’s character Scally, who plays a key role in the film.
Upon his death, Cage was one of the many fans, friends and colleagues to pay tribute to the star.
“Our scenes together on The Surfer were among my favourites I have ever participated in,” Cage said of his co-star. “And Julian is one of my favourite people.”
“He was a kind and intelligent man. My love to his family.”
It was McMahon’s wife, Kelly, who shared the sad news about his passing with the media.
“With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” she wrote in a statement to Deadline two days after his death.
“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.
“We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.”
