Apart from the occasional dramatic divorce in 2023, the world’s celebrities have been rather dull, but the Beckhams are here to save the year.
David and Victoria Beckham have been among the most famous couples on Earth since they hooked up in the late nineties. He was the hot football player; she was a Spice Girl.
Truly, a match made in PR heaven.
What made them so fun was that, to a certain extent, they leant into their power couple status with a nod and a wink to what the people always wanted.
They turned up in matching outfits, publicly supported each other and oozed aspirational love.
By the 2000s, their approach was very much bucking the trend, with most celebrities preferring to keep things low key.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the best known couple in existence then, exuded the impression that they hated all the attention.
Sure, they’d turn up at the odd public event and wow everyone with their chemistry, but paparazzi shots tended to show them clad in baseball caps, trying to sneak undetected out of airports.
They didn’t. Lean. Into it!
Similarly, when the world was enthralled by Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles’ age gap romance, the star couple didn’t really let themselves be seen having any fun together.
There were no matching outfits. Instead we got grainy footage of Wilde dancing at Styles’ sold-out shows and the odd long-lensed shot of them.
Sure, we had a few weeks of them together on red carpets to promote their movie Don’t Worry Darling.
Wilde had directed the film, and Styles had starred in it, but the two wouldn’t even stand next to each other for the whole press tour.
What we’re getting at here is that celebrity couples these days excel in pretending they are above it all.
Thanks to the release of the Netflix documentary series The Beckhams, everyone’s been hit with some Beckham nostalgia.
The matching outfits, all that over-the-top PDA, and the fact that the pair boldly embraced their fame and all the perks that came with it … oh, and the sarong David wore.
It is hard not to watch that series and wish that another celebrity couple would embrace, and enjoy, the whole being famous, privileged, rich and successful thing a bit more.
It seems increasingly unlikely in our latest cool not-to-care era.
Don’t despair fully though. The Beckhams have actually created their own solution, in a sense, with Brooklyn Beckham. Yes, their adult son has stepped up to the celebrity couple plate and licked it clean.
Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz-Beckham seem like the only famous couple having any real fun at the moment.
The pair have become ridiculously famous, not for anything they’ve actually done, but rather for how they embrace their relationship.
They aren’t dodging paparazzi at airports wearing ball caps. No, Brooklyn is getting tattoos of Nicola’s face and blasting it on social media.
He has learnt from the best that more is more.
The young pair aren’t begging for privacy. Instead, they’re posting heaps of photos of each other on social media, turning up to red carpets in matching outfits and waxing lyrical about each other.
If you want to talk about an open expression of love, Brooklyn famously told Hello Magazine that he didn’t miss the United Kingdom because he was in a “little bubble” with Nicola in America. Later he debuted a hand tattoo reading: “our little bubble.”
In a recent post about his wife on Instagram he wrote that he was so “lucky” to be able to wake up to her “gorgeous face.”
Sure, it might make you roll your eyes, but it is the kind of zany fun that we all want from celebrity couples.
It was the exact kind of fun that made everyone fall in love with David and Victoria, and history is repeating itself.
