Brownlow red carpet no fun for a footy-loving feminist, says AFL WAG
IT’S footy’s glamour night, when the women paired with the AFL’s biggest names shine. But one WAG says her trip down the red carpet was no fun at all — especially for a feminist.

A FOOTY WAG has slammed the Brownlow red carpet as an event that focuses on judging women rather than celebrating AFL.
Annie Nolan, partner of Western Bulldogs player Liam Picken, called on the public to “be kind” to the women at footy’s night of nights, claiming wives and girlfriends are offered as much dignity as “a pig on a spit”.
“The night has become about the judgement of the appearance of these women,” she wrote on her Uncanny Annie blog.
“To see how ‘good he did for himself’ and the ‘arm candy’ he has ‘scored’ from being an athlete.”
Ms Nolan, who describes herself as a feminist, said while avid supporters tuned in to celebrate the best and fairest, “the bulk audience of the night tune in to see the red carpet”.
She revealed feeling intimidated when she attended the Brownlow in 2011, as a new mum who hadn’t had much notice or time to prepare.
She said her night had been overshadowed by the “fashion police”.
“I swear I nearly vomited stepping out of the car onto the red carpet.”
Ms Nolan, a mother of three, made headlines around the world when she mocked the endless questions from strangers about her twin daughters.
