Brenton Thwaites says new film How To Make Gravy will be an instant classic

It’s an Australian Christmas classic song, now one of the actors bringing Paul Kelly’s How To Make Gravy to the screen predicts it’ll become a widely loved movie.

Actor Brenton Thwaites has high hopes for his latest gig.

“I honestly believe this one will become a classic,” Thwaites told The Daily Telegraph of the screen adaptation of Paul Kelly’s classic Christmas song How To Make Gravy.

“It is a phenomenal film, it is a tear-jerker from the midpoint onwards and it just touches home,” Thwaites said.

“It is so relatable to the Aussie Christmas family holiday period and the upbringings that we all had, the drama and the very different characters, the deep backstories and the emotional roller coaster that comes with the Aussie family.

“It is wonderful to be a part of that.

How To Make Gravy was released as a song in November 1996 and tells of a newly-imprisoned man spending his first Christmas in jail away from his family.

The much anticipated Binge original feature film will premiere on December 1, and will also star Daniel Henshall, Kate Mulvany, Agathe Roussell, Jonah Wren Phillips and Damon Herriman.

“The song has its own merit, it is a fantastic song and has its own fan base, but this movie just brings to life what I believe millions of people across Australia are going to relate to.”

Thwaites spoke to The Daily Telegraph as Foxtel Group unveiled its 2025 programming slate, including the first look at original reality series, Billion Dollar Playground.
