Twitter has been blasting Will Smith but they’ve tagged the wrong guy

Will Smith might have broken his silence on the infamous slap but it sent a deluge of angry and defensive Twitter users to another unsuspecting target.

Will Smith apologises to Chris Rock for 'unacceptable' Oscars slap

After watching Will Smith’s apology video you might want to take a pause before hitting @ on your Twitter posts.

Hours after Smith broke his silence on the infamous slap that got him banned from the Academy Awards for a decade – angry and defensive Twitter users have been tweeting at and direct messaging Will Smith.

But they have the wrong guy – because Will Smith the actor doesn’t actually have an official Twitter account.

Instead, verified Twitter user @willsmith, ‘Gamer Guy’ has been on the unfortunate receiving end of both the public’s ire and fan’s devotion for the actor.

Despite the obvious profile picture of a white man with a ginger beard and bio that describes him as a podcaster and video game Twitch streamer, Twitter users have been erroneously tagging his account for years.

But after Smith the actor finally broke his silence on slapping Chris Rock, Smith the gamer was forced to disable his DM’s.

“Just want to make it clear to everyone that I’m apologising for nothing. Also, I had to close my DMs,” Gamer Guy tweeted.

This is the second wave of Twitter’s reckless tagging and messaging that Gamer Guy has had to brace against.

Shortly after Smith’s assault was broadcasted globally, Gamer Guy jokingly retweeted “Everybody hates Chris”.

“I’m sorry you’re offended,” he said. “Hopefully all anyone remembers at the end of the show is this inappropriately upbeat “In Memoriam” segment.”

But when Twitter went on full blast with outrage calling on actor Smith to either apologise or validated him for “defending” his wife, Gamer Guy copped the tweets tagging his account in the vitriol.

“Real talk, I’m not the person you’re upset/happy with,” he clarified shortly after the live slap.

“I make podcasts and video games for a living.”

The post is now pinned to the top of his account in the hopes that wayward Tweeters get the hint that they’re tagging the wrong person.

But he wrapped up his post by adding his two cents on the actor’s actions.

“At the risk of making people pissed off at me instead of that other guy, the world would be a better place if we stopped answering words with violence.”
