Glitz and glamour was back in Hollywood at the Screen Actors Guild Awards – but it was a night of disappointment for Australia’s nominees.
Mega-stars Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett walked away empty-handed, as did Succession actor Sarah Snook and rising star, Kodi Smit-McPhee, who all missed out in their SAG categories.
Kidman was in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for her portrayal of TV comedy queen Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos – an award which was won by Jessica Chastain, for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Nightmare Alley star Blanchett was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, which Ariana DeBose, of West Side Story, won.
And Melbourne-based Snook, nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for Succession, lost to Squid Game’s HoYeon Jung.
Smit-McPhee, who was up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Netflix’s The Power of the Dog, was beaten by CODA’s Troy Kotsur.
In the TV category, Murray Bartlett, the Australian star of The White Lotus, also lost out to Michael Keaton (who won for his role in Dopesick) for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series.
Meantime, sexy style well and truly returned to Hollywood, with a string of stars turning heads in revealing, low-cut gowns.
Known for her polished and poised dress sense, Blanchett flashed some flesh in Giorgio Armani on the silver-coloured carpet at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.
The White Lotus actor Alexandra Daddario and Vanessa Hudgens also got the sexy memo, wearing Versace gowns with plunging V-necklines, as did Lady Gaga, in white Armani Prive.
While she didn’t win, Kidman served up one of the SAG’s most chic outfits, wearing a “bow-tiful” black Saint Lauren gown, with a cream bow at the neck, as she walked the carpet with husband, Keith Urban.
Naomi Watts made her first red carpet appearance with her boyfriend of five years, Morning Wars star Billy Crudup. The private pair have been quietly dating since co-starring in the Netflix series Gypsy in 2017.
“I try to make it a point of not commenting publicly one way or the other about my personal life,” Crudup told E! News previously, when asked about their relationship.
“I don’t particularly see the advantage of people knowing too much about me if I’m constantly trying to trick them into thinking I’m someone else.”
British-born, Australian-raised Watts, 53, was previously in a relationship with actor Liev Schreiber from 2005 to 2016.
Held at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, this year’s SAGs signalled a change of venue for the respected awards, which had been previously been held at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium.
The SAGs are considered a credible barometer for the Oscars, which are being held on March 28.

Other notable fashion highlights included Selena Gomez in a puffy-sleeved black Oscar de la Renta dress, while House of Gucci actor Jared Leto – known for his seriously eccentric ensembles – wore a baby blue Gucci blazer, waistcoat and matching trousers.
