Presenters joke as big Logie winners were no-shows

In awkward scenes at Sunday’s Logies, multiple big winners not only didn’t show up to accept their awards, but also failed to send in a thank you video.

And the Gold Logie goes to …

There were some awkward scenes at Australian TV’s night of nights, with multiple winners of the biggest awards failing to show up.

Among those who weren’t in attendance to accept their Logies on Sunday included Most Popular Actress winner Kitty Flanagan, Most Popular Actor winner Guy Pearce, Most Outstanding Actress winner Anna Torv and Most Outstanding Actor winner Richard Roxburgh.

To make matters more awkward, Torv was the only absent star who sent in an acceptance speech video.

Making light of the no-shows, Tom Gleeson and Sophie Monk had the crowd in stitches when presenting Pearce with his award.

Upon reading out his name, Gleeson searched into the crowd in exaggerated fashion.

Monk then joked: “Guy Pearce could not be here so I will accept it on his behalf … But I bet he would be stoked.”

Pearce did make up for it today however, tweeting to his followers he was thrilled to receive a Logie.

“Holy cow, seems I just won a Logie! Thank you so much to all who voted and all who watched Jack Irish over the years,” he wrote.

Elsewhere, comedian Tim Minchin presented Roxburgh with his award, before accepting it on his behalf.

“Richard Roxburgh isn’t here – and he also didn’t send in an acceptance speech video, so you’ll have to imagine what he might have said,” Minchin quipped after yet another award went out to an absent actor.

But the winners who were there delivered some good speeches to soften the blow.

Have You Been Paying Attention won Most Popular Comedy Program and star Sam Pang showed why.

“I did want to acknowledge running into the 1967 Gold Logie winner Hazel Phillips who is here tonight – 92 years of age,” he said, before turning to the show’s host Tom Gleisner.

“Bit awkward for Tom. It’s weird when you run into an ex.”

Hamish Blake took home the Gold Logie at the end of the night, bringing to an end a four-hour long awards ceremony.

“If you are watching this, you’re an insomniac,” he said.

“If you are also somebody that supports Australian TV, we would not be here without you. So thank you to the people at home.”
