Plunging necklines, power shoulders, stitched-on details and vintage dresses – style made a bold statement beyond the superficial at the Oscars.
Hollywood’s best dressed stars used their outfits to draw attention to sustainability causes and gender inequality, as they strutted the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Australian Bombshell nominee Margot Robbie wore vintage Chanel from the French fashion house’s 1994 collection, in a nod to recycled fashion, sporting an off-the-shoulder midnight blue dress that was once worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
“We were obsessed with ’90s supermodels for hair and makeup, so there was something really great about (the dress) being (worn by) … Claudia Schiffer because she was our inspiration,” Robbie’s stylist Kate Young told People magazine.
“It’s classic, but has a dramatic feel that is good for the Oscars.
“We’re having a good time with it and not taking it all so seriously.”
Natalie Portman used her Dior outfit to protest against the lack of female directors recognised at the Oscars, after none were nominated for Best Director.
Portman had the names of Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood) stitched onto her cape.
“I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in my subtle way,” Portman told the Los Angeles Times.
And Hollywood director Spike Lee paid tribute to Kobe Bryant, the late Lakers basketball legend who tragically died in a helicopter crash, by wearing a purple and yellow Gucci blazer with Bryant’s No. 24 on the lapels.
In other fashion highlights, Bombshell nominee Charlize Theron was sleek and sophisticated in a black Dior gown that was likened to Angelina Jolie’s infamous 2012 “side leg” pose. Following her Gucci collaboration at the recent Grammys, Bad Guy singer Billie Eilish wore an oversized white Chanel suit, accessorised with fingerless lace gloves and a matching manicure.
Chanel also dressed Spanish actor Penelope Cruz in a vintage satin-and-tulle Chanel dress from the ’90s, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Margaret Qualley, in a figure-hugging feathered ensemble.
Joker star and Best Actor winner Joaquin Phoenix wore the same custom-made Stella McCartney tuxe he has sported to every award show this season, in a bid to “reduce waste”.
And in one of the truly bizarre fashion looks of this year’s Oscars was former stripper turned reality TV star Blac Chyna, wearing a black Dona Matoshi dress with a thigh-split, and flaunting extreme cleavage and her leg tattoos.
It was unclear how Chyna – who shares a young daughter with Rob Kardashian – scored an invitation to the awards, given her most recent outing was on E!’s short-lived series, Rob & Chyna.
