OSCARS 2020: Who will and who should win the major categories?

There were plenty of favourites heading into this year’s Oscars - 1917, Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, Parasite, Marriage Story - but before any statues were handed out, all eyes were on the red carpet.

Rebel Wilson, who stars in Best Picture-nominated JoJo Rabbit, was an absolute knockout in her ultra-glam gold sequinned Oscars gown.

The Aussie actress has been documenting her fitness journey in recent months – and the result was certainly on full display at this year’s event.

Johansson is up for two Oscars: Best Actress for Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress for JoJo Rabbit.

Her fellow Best Supporting Actress nominee Margot Robbie came as Morticia Addams, and it worked for her.

I was all ready to throw a bit of shade at this frothy number on Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh... but it kind of grew on me. She looks like the human equivalent of a glass of champagne.

At first glance, the biggest talking point from Natalie Portman’s outfit was her Harry Potter-ish cape.

But upon closer inspection, it emerged the actress included a very pointed detail within the gold embroidery – and it certainly packed a punch.

Meanwhile, director Spike Lee, one of today’s presenters, turned his suit into a walking tribute for late NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who tragically died in a helicopter crash last month.

Lee donned a customised purple and yellow ensemble in honour of Bryant’s team, the LA Lakers, and had the player’s jersey number stitched onto the front and back.

Look, Saoirse Ronan is exceptional on screen and deserves every acting accolade that comes her way – but whoever decided she should add an adult-sized bib to her lilac gown should be fired.

Best Actress nominee Charlize Theron, recognised for her role in Bombshell, kept it simple and elegant... with a little bit of Angelina-leg thrown in for good measure.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Laura Dern 90 per cent nailed it... but the other (tasselled) 10 per cent had us a little confused.

Best Actress nominee, Judy star Renee Zellweger, was exquisite in a fitted beaded white one-shouldered dress.

One of this year’s performers, Adele Dazeem – sorry, Idina Menzel – was wearing a strapless fuschia dress and an expression that suggests someone had just told her John Travolta will be introducing her again.

Earlier, in the first “huh?!” invitation of the Oscars, Rob Kardashian’s ex-fiance Blac Chyna turned up in a daring black velvet gown, which by my count has two very significant wardrobe malfunction danger zones.

Awards show veteran Giuliana Rancic, covering the event for E!, was among the very first arrivals, wearing a showstopping jewel-encrusted red gown with a feather skirt.
