ON the biggest night of his life, Eddie Redmayne took the time to thank two Neighbours stars for helping him land his first Oscar.

Speaking to news.com.au after his win for Best Actor, The Theory Of Everything star praised both Alan Fletcher (who stars as Dr Karl Kennedy) and Jackie Woodburne (who plays Susan Kennedy) on the long-running Aussie soap.

“I think they’re amazing,” the 33-year-old said.

“I’m a huge fan of them from old. I’ve learnt a lot from them from watching them daily.”

Touched by the actor’s nod, Woodburne, 59, replied: “It’s always wonderful when someone compliments your work, but to have such lovely things said from such an incredibly talented actor is very humbling and means more to me than he will ever know.”

Fletcher was equally appreciative: “To receive such generous praise from an actor of Eddie Redmayne’s startling ability and status has been thrilling for both of us.

“It never ceases to excite me to hear examples of the influence Neighbours has had beyond Australia. And congratulations Eddie for the recognition of your wonderful performance in The Theory of Everything.”

The high praise from Redmayne comes just over a week after he singled out the Aussie actors in an interview with Elle magazine, saying, “They are the greatest unsung acting duo in history”.

The Brit, who portrays scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, told the mag: “Watch, and you’ll find that everything they do is on another level of genius. I really do think so. They are the greatest unsung acting duo in history ... (If I met them) that would be complete stage fright.

“I’ve met quite a few extraordinary actors, but either Susan or Karl? Well, I don’t think I’d be able to talk.”

Eddie Redmayne picked up the Best Actor Oscar award for his role in The Theory of Everything.
