Oscars 2022 red carpet: Best and worst dressed

Revealing gowns, shirtless actors, intimate PDAs - this year’s Oscars got off to a surprisingly loose start. Follow our live coverage.

Celebrities dazzle on the Oscars 2022 red carpet

Oscars day is finally upon us again.

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have descended on the iconic Dolby Theatre in LA for this year’s Academy Awards, hosted by Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, which is now underway.

The Oscars will honour the best in film over the past year, with 10 nominees battling it out for the big gong, Best Picture: Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

The Oscars ceremony coverage is now airing on Channel 7 and you can follow all the action as it happens on our live blog.

(You can check out the full list of nominations here).

But before that kicked off, we got to check out all the best, worst and most outrageous looks from the red carpet.

And oh boy, was there plenty in the “outrageous” category.

Far from the extremely safe looks we normally see on the Oscars red carpet, many of the stars have gone all out with some extremely risque fashion decisions.

Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross turned plenty of heads with her incredibly revealing red gown, which featured plenty of material at the bottom.. and not a lot at the top:

Unsurprisingly, the jaw-dropping look has caused a bit of a kerfuffle on Twitter.

R&B duo Halle and Chloe Bailey will also be spending the next few hours on the precipice of an extremely graphic wardrobe malfunction and appear completely relaxed about it, so I guess power to them:

Timothée Chalamet thought he was RSVP’ing to the MTV Awards, oops.

As did YouTube star Rickey Thompson:

Pam and Tommy star Lily James kept things racy in a low-cut, pale pink lacy dress with a daring thigh-high split and tulle embellishments.

A-list couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis channelled old-school Hollywood glam as they posed together on the red carpet.

Lupita Nyong'o - who took home the Best Supporting Actress statue in 2014 - dazzled in gold sequins.

Speaking of dazzling: Best Actress nominee Jessica Chastain, who stars in the title role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, was an absolute vision as she posed alongside her husband, Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo.

There is... a LOT going on with Best Actress nominee Nicole Kidman’s dress. We’ve got a puffy little flotation device around the waist. We’ve got a bedazzled train. We’ve got a pointy strapless feature.

And look, with a ceremony tipped to run for around three hours, the mechanics around how she sits down in it are distressing me:

Kirsten Dunst, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Rose Gordon in the critically-acclaimed The Power of the Dog, went for a strapless red gown:

Girls Trip star Jada Pinkett Smith’s dress looked like my sandwiches did when I accidentally left them in my backpack for weeks in high school.

Tiffany Haddish, who is presenting an award during the ceremony, was absolutely iconic in a strapless shining green gown, covered in silver diamonds.

King Richard star Saniyya Sidney - who played a young Venus Williams in the Best Picture-nominated biographical sports drama - was breathtaking in a fairytale pastel gown.

Kourtney Kardashian and fiance Travis Barker were uncharacteristically demure with their fashion choices, presumably because their inclusion on the guest list was enough of a shock.

Of course, they didn’t miss an opportunity to strike their signature red carpet pose:

Best Actress nominee Kristen Stewart (nominated for her gritty portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer) went for a very non-traditional look:

Euphoria and Spider-Man star Zendaya was Hit Me Baby One More Time on the top, formal evening wear on the bottom.

Brother-sister duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell hit the red carpet looking very colour-coordinated ahead of the performance of their Oscar-nominated Bond theme song, No Time To Die.

Ceremony host Wanda Sykes kept things classic in a crisp white suit.

One of her fellow hosts, Regina Hall, opted for a draping, sheer gown which flashed a glimpse of her underwear and featured elaborate sleeves and a train.

This year’s third host, Amy Schumer, opted for a more simple outfit, with a low-cut, long-sleeve, full-length navy dress embellished with a glittering bow.

Vanessa Hudgens, who hosted the pre-show, was one of the first to arrive, wearing a sequined Michael Kors gown.

Former Disney star Sofia Carson was draped in kilometres of black tulle.

Jamie Lee Curtis donned a sparkly dark-hued gown, and accessorised with some fishnet fingerless gloves that she presumably took home from the Freaky Friday set.
