MTV Australia slammed for asking for English subtitles for Latina actresses Eva Longoria, America Ferrera

MTV Australia has hastily deleted a racist Golden Globes post poking fun at Eva Longoria and America Ferrera — but not before sparking full-blown outrage.

MTV AUSTRALIA has been labelled ‘trash’ after posting a racist tweet requesting “English subtitles” for Latina actresses Eva Longoria and America Ferrera when they presented a Golden Globes award.

As Longoria and Ferrera made light of the fact many people couldn’t tell the difference between Latina celebrities, the person manning MTV Australia’s Twitted feed made the bizarre decision to make fun of their accents.

“Where are the English subtitles? We have no idea what @AmericaFerrera and @EvaLongoria are saying,” the post said.

Outraged Twitter users instantly jumped on their case and the offending tweet was hastily deleted — but not before screenshots were taken.

Ella Cerón, whose bio describes her as an editor at Teen Vogue, bit back at the Aussie account in a post that was retweeted more than 1500 times within an hour.

P.s. America and Eva were *born in* the US so they don't have foreign accents, people trying to explain away this joke!

As a barrage of disgusted users shamed MTV Australia and called for the poster to be fired, the tweet was removed and replaced with an apology.

However in a double fail, MTV Australia’s response has also been accused of being in poor taste after they defended themselves by saying their original ‘gag’ was in reference to Longoria and Ferrera’s joke.

Our Tweet was in reference to @EvaLongoria & @AmericaFerrera’s #GoldenGlobes joke. We sincerely apologise for causing offence.

This explanation has — naturally — confused those who can’t see the connection between a joke on appearance, and one on accents.

User @TallGrrl wrote: *Their* joke was “you think we all look alike”. MTV’s joke was “& their accents are SO heavy we can’t understand”.

Another, @biebersIatina, cast the posts are “Disgusting and in extremely poor taste. This “apology” does not sound the least bit sincere. Whoever wrote it.”

Albert Santos, under handle @albertinho, wrote: “As a Latin Australian, your non-apology and deflections are worse than your tweet. Thanks for nothing.”

“The intern at @MTVAUSTRALIA who posted this offensive racist tweet needs to be fired immediately. Truly disgusting,” wrote @PopCultureShady.

Kenn Rodriguez-Reed, under @krodNM, made a clever jab: “Hey, @MTVAUSTRALIA, a Mexican director won the #GoldenGlobes award for best director. Got anything to say about it?”

And then, there was this guy who pretty much summed up the overall sentiments:
