WALEED Aly’s Gold Logie win meant one thing to his wife Susan Carland: the world is finally figuring out just how great her husband is.
Speaking to Mamamia’sThe Binge podcast, Carland described the moment Aly’s name was read out on Sunday night as “surreal, amazing and exciting”.
“I was nervous for him going up there, obviously he’s a very accomplished public speaker but he was a bit nervous about this speech to be honest,” she said. “And I think he just wanted to do a good job and do justice to the moment and so, as his wife, I was nervous for him — but just so, so proud. For me, I just feel like finally the world is realising what I’ve always known about this guy for the last 15 years, so it feels like the world has finally caught up.”
During his acceptance speech,The Project host thanked his wife, telling the crowd, “If she had my job she’d be much better at it than me.”
“She’s sharper, wittier, funnier and infinitely more charming and likeable and I’m really glad she doesn’t have my job because otherwise I definitely wouldn’t have it,” he said.
But Carland said she was unaware of the kind words her husband planned on saying.
“When he started to say all that I had tears in my eyes but I really fought them back because I didn’t want it to become about me, I didn’t want TV crews to be saying, ‘Oh she’s crying!’ I wanted it all to be about Waleed, so I kept it together.
“But I was a bit teary this morning when I got up and just reflected on it. It was just so outrageously, ridiculously generous. And totally undeserved, I can tell you that. He was being ridiculously kind and generous and I don’t deserve it at all.”
It was Carland’s first Logie Awards, and she joked she felt out of place among the stars of Aussie television.
“In the end, everyone was so nice, like, Delta Goodrem told me she liked my dress! Like, what is that? That is just outrageous,” she laughed. “She’s obviously the nicest person on the planet. Everyone is famous and amazing and beautiful and slim and then I’m standing there. It was a surreal experience.”
