HE HAS taken out the coveted Gold Logie but Waleed Aly has a few more reasons to smile than his predecessor Carrie Bickmore.

TV’s new golden boy is not only revelling in the knowledge he won Australia’s biggest prize but can happily rest assured his award is apparently worth more, thanks to soaring gold prices.

When Bickmore won her Logie last year, gold was 16 per cent cheaper.

Weighing in at 1.47kg, and assuming the entire Logie trophy is pure gold, Bickmore’s would have been worth $72,000 one year ago.

In comparison Aly’s would be worth $84,000 based on today’s prices, according to ABC Bullion chief economist Jordan Eliseo.

But let’s get this clear straight up, the 1.47kg Logie statue is not made of pure gold - it is however gold plated, obviously.

That aside, it is still fair to say the price of gold these days isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

Mr Eliseo told news.com.au gold has soared in the past 12 months primarily due to lower interest rates and more volatile share markets.

To put that in perspective there are 32.15 troy ounces of gold in a kilo.

“At a price of $1750 per troy ounce that’s just over $56,000 per kilo,” he said.

“Gold is a great asset to save or invest in, with the price rising more than shares, superannuation funds and even Aussie property over the past 15 plus years.”

But let’s be realistic, Logie organisers TV Week would hardly be shelling out for pure gold nuggets because even an Olympic medal isn’t all gold.

According to about.com, it’s actually silver, which must be at least .925 grade, but is covered with at least 6gs of pure gold.

Even if the Logie was pure gold, we are sure that either gold Logie neither Aly or Bickmore would be willing to part with their prize for any amount of cash.

According to the makers of the Aussie statue, Premier Awards, the Logie is made “exclusively made for our client” and they won’t be selling it onto anyone else.

And if you’re thinking of getting a replica then forget it because that’s out of the question too.

“Sorry guys, don’t bother asking us to. We respect our clients exclusivity and the iconic nature of this award,” a description on its website reads.

A spokesman for the firm would not reveal how the statue is made.

Whatever its content, a Logie still pales in comparison to the size of a Bafta, 2.8kg, or an Oscar, 3.8kg but is a little more impressive than an Olympic Gold medal, 531g.

Whichever way you look at it, any golden statue is worth its weight in gold, but forget trying to profit from selling one.

In 2014, the family of Oscar winner Joseph Wright launched a legal battle with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over their sale of the statue.

Wright died in 1985 and won the coveted statue way back in 1942 for his work as art director of My Gal Sal.

His family sold it for $80,000 but the Academy launched action on the basis that it breached the rule adopted in 1951 prohibiting winners or their heirs from selling the statuettes without first offering it to the organisation for one dollar.
