Waleed Aly mentions mysterious 'Mustafa' in Logies speech

A RADICAL extremist group has slammed Waleed Aly’s Logie win, saying the popular media personality risked no longer “finding an adequate home in Islam”.

In a lengthy Facebook post entitled “Waleed Aly and the manufactured Muslim industry”, Wassim Doureihi, a spokesman for the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, said Muslims should not be celebrating Aly’s victory.

Doureihi says Australians have been dividing Muslims into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ — those who support a secular democracy, and those who support establishing an Islamic State-like ‘Caliphate’, respectively.

He describes Aly as the former, saying ‘good Muslims’ will soon “start to look down upon the very people they originally sought to assist”.

“Waleed Aly’s Gold Logie, rather than being a cause for celebration, is a cause for commiseration,” he writes.

“To Waleed, for being a victim of the government’s self serving identity politics, and for the Muslim community, in failing people like Waleed by making secular politics look more appealing than Islamic politics.”

He stressed this is nothing personal against the TV presenter, describing him as “thoroughly intelligent and respectable”, and a man who carries himself with “the utmost integrity”.

News Corp has approached Mr Doureihi for comment, but he has not responded.

Waleed Aly won Gold at the 58th Annual TV Week Logie Awards on Sunday evening.

“I think it’s fair to say I thought I’d never win a Logie,” Aly said. “I was more likely to win an AFL Grand Final in my mind. I’m gobsmacked.

“To know that the audience has accepted you into their universe is the most wonderful thing in the world.”

He dedicated his win to everybody with an dedicate his win to those with an “unpronounceable name”.
