AUSTRALIAN’S have rallied behind Carrie Bickmore’s campaign to raise awareness about brain cancer.

During an emotional acceptance speech for the Gold Logie last night, Bickmore urged people to don a beanie this morning and upload it to social media using the hashtag #beaniesforbraincancer.

“I want to use my two minutes up here to talk about something incredibly close to my heart — brain cancer,” she said on stage last night.

“I want to say to you that every five hours in Australia someone is diagnosed with brain cancer and 8 out of 10 people that are diagnosed will die. Everyone thinks it is this rare form of cancer but it is not. It kills more people under 40 than any other cancer. It kills more kids than any other disease.

“In 2010 my husband Greg was one of the unlucky ones and after a long battle he died from brain cancer ... Throughout his cancer journey he used to wear a lot of hats and a lot of beanies and that was because he felt embarrassed about his scars. I said ‘don’t be embarrassed, scars are really cool’.

The Project star urged Australian’s to wear a beanie today in order to “get the nation talking about brain cancer”.

“Sam, Kochie, Karl, Lisa - wear it on TV tomorrow,” said Bickmore.

“If you’re going to school put a beanie on. If you’re going to work, put a beanie on. Take a pic of yourself with the hashtag #beaniesforbraincancer.”

And Australia has responded.

Both the Today Show hosts and Sunrise hosts wore beanies on air this morning and people around the country have uploaded photos of themselves in the headwear to show their support for the campaign.
