A WORLD of optical illusions will open up at the NGV this summer for its blockbuster exhibition.

Between Two Worlds/Escher X nendo will feature more than 160 prints and drawings by Dutch artist MC Escher, the master of optical illusion. They will be presented in an immersive environment created by acclaimed Japanese design studio nendo, combining the world of artist and designer.

NGV director Tony Ellwood said the exhibition reflects the gallery’s commitment to presenting dynamic programs that appeal to a diverse audience.

“At the heart of this program is the never-before-seen exhibition that will showcase the consummate skill and unique vision of both artist and designer,” Ellwood said.

“This exhibition further cements the gallery’s reputation as a destination for both art and design in our region.”

Escher created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century.

The works on display at the NGV will travel from the world’s largest collection of Escher’s work in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and is the first major Australian presentation of the artist’s work, spanning his full career from 1916 to 1969.

The announcement comes after last summer’s blockbuster, Triennial, broke attendance records with more than 1.2 million people visiting the exhibition.
