ACMI has scored a superheroic coup by snaring the costumes from the Hollywood blockbuster Thor: Love And Thunder for an exclusive exhibition in Melbourne.

The exhibit features costumes that adorned the film’s leading men and women, including the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth), The Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman), Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Zeus (Russell Crowe).

Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, and axe, Stormbreaker, will also go on display alongside Zeus’s lighting bolt and Valkyrie’s dagger and sword.

ACMI’s Sarah Tutton said: “We’re very excited. We’re big fans of Marvel, and we’re big fans of (the film’s director) Taika Waititi, so it’s a real sweet spot for us.

“It’s a nice exclusive for Melbourne.”

Emmy Award-winning costume designer Mayes Rubeo collaborated with the film’s A-list cast to establish their characters’ “DNA” through their wardrobes.

Rubeo said she had also meetings with Waititi and the film’s director of photography, producers, production designers, set decorators, and hair and makeup team to craft the ensembles.

“When I create a look, I create that whole, cohesive look,” Rubeo said.

She also engaged First Nations artist Otis Carey to create a print for the silk tunic in Thor’s robe outfit.

The free exhibition opens on July 27 at ACMI’s centrepiece display, The Story Of The Moving Image, and will be on display for a whole year.
