And Just Like That … we’re getting a third season of the Sex and The City reboot.
Ahead of Thursday’s season 2 finale, which many fans had been speculating could be the last episode ever, HBO Max confirmed instead it would be renewing the series – screening on Binge in Australia – for another run of episodes.
Executive producer Michael Patrick King said he was excited to further explore the show’s iconic characters Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) plus the new additions including Seema (Sarita Choudhury) Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker) and Karen (Nicole Pittman).
“We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors,” he said.
“And Just Like That … Here comes season three.”
Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said And Just Like That ranks as the no. 1 Max Original overall, and is the most-watched returning Max Original to date.
“As we approach the highly anticipated season finale on Thursday, we raise our cosmos to Michael Patrick King and his magnificent team of writers, producers, cast and crew who continue to charm us, 25 years later, with dynamic friendships and engaging stories. We cannot wait for audiences to see where season three will take our favourite New Yorkers.”
The third season news comes as fans are gearing up for the second instalment’s finale on Thursday and not just to find out what will happen with Carrie and Aidan (John Corbett), but also for the highly-anticipated cameo from Kim Cattrall as her beloved Sex and the City character Samantha Jones.
Cattrall’s character will speak over the phone with Carrie in the episode, titled “The Last Supper Part Two.”.
Fans had been devastated that Cattrall and Parker couldn’t patch up their much-reported, off-screen issues to get Samantha on the reboot.
On screen, her absence was explained by Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw that Ms Jones had moved to London.
The 66-year-old actor filmed her lines without seeing or speaking with her former co-stars of Sex and the City in March.
The news of the third season has meant fans couldn’t help wondering that perhaps Cattrall will be back for good.
“The fact that they’re keeping it very hush-hush says that there’s some implication that she might be coming back — not this season, but it’s definitely a cliffhanger that’s gonna get people to come back for season three,” an insider told The New York Post at the time.
While that’s not confirmed yet, what is clear is given the ongoing Hollywood strikes, there will most certainly be a delay in starting work on the third season. It’s anticipated the third helping won’t hit screens until late 2024.
