David Jones chief executive Scott Fyfe said the refurbishment marked a “new chapter” for the store and ushers in “a new era of retail in Australia”.

Leong said: “It’s a very chic black carpet event because we are in Melbourne, so I think it’s very fitting. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the store. It’s my favourite.”

Bishop said: “I’m delighted to be invited to events like this. It gives me a chance to dress up, have a glamorous evening out and support Australian fashion”.

Bartel stepped out with a girlfriend in Dion Lee but declined to comment; she will be attending the Caulfield Cup on Saturday as a friend of the event.
