AUSTRALIAN comedian Jim Jefferies says his nightmare gig for James Packer and Mariah Carey has given him enough material for an entire routine.

The diva summoned Jefferies to her Los Angeles mansion to be the entertainment at a party for her then billionaire-beau Packer, in front of a star-studded line-up of guests that included the comedian’s hero Eddie Murphy, as well as Hollywood royalty Al Pacino and Warren Beatty.

The former power couple had seen Jefferies’ famous 2015 gun control routine online after it went viral on YouTube, sending his profile soaring in the US and helping land him his hit comedy news show.

But when he stood up to start his set at the party the following year, Packer had initially forgotten who Jefferies was and wondered what he was doing there.

The comedian, who will bring his Night Talker tour to Australian arenas in December, had to sign a nondisclosure agreement about the gig and the party.

But despite naming names and milking the excruciating experience for laughs into his most recent Netflix special, Jefferies says there have been no repercussions. Yet.

“Oh it was terrible,” Jefferies said of the party. “That was only the tip of the iceberg of that gig — I could talk about that gig for another f---king 40 minutes. That was no small thing, that gig. In saying that, I haven’t heard from James Packer since that routine and I think I am staying in a couple of his hotels while I am on this tour so I don’t know if there will be a s--- left in the bed. I’m not sure.”

Sydney-born Jefferies has become one of Australia’s most successful comedy exports of recent years, achieving star status first in the UK and then in the US, thanks to his crude, edgy and sometimes downright offensive material.

While he has often been derided as foul-mouthed and misogynist, he says the gun control routine and his topical The Jim Jefferies show have made audiences reassess his forthright comedy, and broadened what was almost entirely a young, male audience.

“I think there is a space for me,” he said. “Being a bit of a Lefty myself, I never thought that the Left wing would like me because of my crudity or whatever. But there are a lot of crude Left wing people like myself out there as it turns out. But I hate putting labels on people. I think we are more diverse then we think we are.”
