WHILE gala gowns, lots of gushing and a bevy of soap stars will fill the red carpet at Crown Towers on Sunday night, there will be one couple whose journey to Melbourne’s Logie awards will not have been an easy one.
Kerri-Anne Kennerley, a TV industry veteran may never have won the Gold statue but just being there will be its very own grand prize.
With husband John having suffered a devastating spinal injury last year, leaving him an ‘incomplete quadriplegic’, the logistics of just getting on a plane from Sydney to Melbourne will be mammoth. But as KAK has always said: ‘the show goes on’.
According to entertainment reporter Peter Ford, Kerri-Anne and John will both be attending Sunday night’s Logie awards.
Ford said Kerri-Anne told him that she had never been to a Logies without John ‘so why should it be any different?” Ford says.
When Kerri-Anne Kennerley told her story to Sunday Night last year, she said ‘a whole chunk of me doesn’t exist any more’ after her husband’s accident.
Making the most of what is a difficult situation, Kerri-Anne Kennerley took husband John home to their modified house last November, eight months after the spinal injury he suffered after falling off a small balcony at a golf course.
The 75-year-old and his vivacious wife have converted their Woollahra home so it is wheelchair-friendly. complete with ramps, a hoist and cupboards full of catheters, gauze and lotions.
In November, Kerri-Anne told The Sunday Telegraph that her husband of 32 years can no longer be left alone for a moment, because “there are 50 things that can go wrong within an hour”.
While both John and Kerri-Anne’s lives are forever changed, in her inimitable style, KAK has been keeping up appearances.
The TV personality took time out to attend the triumphant fashion show of her friend, Carla Zampatti, at the Sydney Theatre Company during the week. Dressed in a sleek red dress from the label, KAK embodies the upbeat spirit of a true survivor. Just like her husband.
The Logies are on the Nine Network on Sunday night.
