The state government will cap enrolments for some tertiary courses from next year to avoid training students in industries with limited jobs.
Eight TAFE courses will face restricted placements from 2020 — most under the Free TAFE offering — as the program is rolled out for the second year.
Despite being paid-up courses, there will be a cap on enrolments for the Certificate IV in Business, and Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.
Free TAFE courses will also face restrictions, including Diplomas in Community Services and in Justice, the Certificate IV in Youth Work, Certificate III and IV in Education Support and Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping.
It’s not yet clear what the limit will be for each course, while many enrolment applications are still to be made.
Meanwhile, two new early childhood education courses have been added to the Free TAFE offering to prepare for the roll out of funded three-year-old kinder across the state by 2022.
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney said modelling had revealed the courses where students could “continue to go into industries that need workers”.
“Skilled workers are in demand in our major infrastructure projects like Metro tunnel, and in early childhood education as three-year-old kinder rolls out,” she said.
“Other industries such as bookkeeping have a strong supply of workers.”
More than 36,000 students enrolled in Free TAFE priority courses in its first year.
