An analysis of the 2014 and 2018 NAPLAN scores has revealed the schools with the most improved results in Melbourne’s south over the past five years.
The school with the most improved Year 5 results between 2014 and 2018 was Seaford Park Primary School – which had 150 pupils – where the average results across all subjects improved by 16 per cent.
Principal Julia Braakhuis said the school’s curriculum was based on explicit teaching practices, where teachers take a step-by-step approach to showing students what to do and how to do it.
“This solid base is further developed throughout the school where children continue to be taught explicit approaches to these areas of the curriculum,” she said.
“Our children benefit from this approach and it reflects in our positive NAPLAN results.”

A Federal Department of Education spokesperson said NAPLAN provided insight for schools and teachers about how well education programs were working, and where there was need for improvement.
“NAPLAN shows parents how their children are progressing against national standards and provides a basis for discussion with their child’s teachers,” the spokesperson said.
“It also provides students with an opportunity to see what they have learned and how they are progressing over time.”
