Inner Melbourne’s most crowded classrooms revealed

A special Leader analysis has delved into the schools in north western Melbourne to see which schools are the best resourced with teachers. See how the schools in your area compare.

The schools with Inner Melbourne’s most crowded and best resourced classrooms have been revealed.

An analysis of national data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority has revealed the schools where teachers have the most students in class.

The figures show there were more students per teacher at Ozford College than any other school in the region in 2018.

According to the most up to data, which includes all state and private schoolsy, Ozford College had 21.6 students for every teacher, the highest in the area.

The second highest student-teacher ratios were at Merri Creek Primary School where there was an average of 17.4 students for every teacher at the school.

At Spensley Street Primary School there were 17.3 students for every teacher, the Inner Melbourne region’s third highest.

In contrast there one teacher for every 2.7 students at Parkville College, the region’s lowest ratio.

The second lowest ratio was at Melbourne Indigenous Transition School where there were 4.4 students per teacher.

The figures show at Lynall Hall Community School there were 4.6 students per teacher, the third lowest ratio in the region.

According to ACARA, the national student-teacher ratio was 13.5.

Across the country independent private schools had the lowest student to teacher ratios with 11.7.

Government schools had an average of 13.8 students for every teacher while Catholic schools had an average of 14.

Student-teacher ratios do not take into account teacher aides or non-teaching staff at schools, only the full-time equivalent teachers.

Spensley Street Primary School: 17.3 students per teacher

Carlton North Primary School: 17.0 students per teacher

North Melbourne Primary School: 16.4 students per teacher

Clifton Hill Primary School: 16.3 students per teacher

Princes Hill Primary School: 16.2 students per teacher

Fitzroy North Primary School: 15.9 students per teacher

Melbourne Girls College: 15.8 students per teacher

Yarra Primary School: 15.4 students per teacher

Melbourne Indigenous Transition School: 4.4 students per teacher

Lynall Hall Community School: 4.6 students per teacher
