Schoolgirls offered ‘beer for first punch’ in Glenferrie Rd brawl

Footage has emerged of a brawl between year 10 schoolgirls in which a boy appears to offer a beer to the first one to throw a punch. See the video.

Fight breaks out between school students

A confronting video of a Glenferrie Rd brawl between students shows an older boy appearing to offer a beer to the first girl to throw a punch.

The video from the fight between the year 10 students from Melbourne Girls’ College and Strathcona Girls’ Grammar has gone viral since the incident on February 19.

In the video the two girls, wearing royal blue and navy blue check school uniforms, are briefly chatting.

The Melbourne Girls’ College student is then seen slapping the Strathcona student to the face. The clash in Hawthorn, off the popular shopping strip, is reportedly over a boy.

The brawl prompted Strathcona to warn girls to avoid the area for the “time being”, saying its student was the victim of an unprovoked attack.

Ruyton and MLC advised their girls to show caution in the area, a popular post-school meet-up area. Several schools contacted by the Herald Sun said they had a standing order to their students to behave, especially as they were identifiable in their uniforms.

One teacher said they had told students to do nothing they wouldn’t be proud to have captured on video.

After the slap to the girl’s face, the older boy hands the girl a bottle of drink and she turns around.

The Strathcona student puts her bag on the ground and pounces on the other student, appearing to put her in a headlock. Another Melbourne Girls’ College student attempts to intervene to stop the fight.

But in what is very uncomfortable viewing, there is an ongoing tussle with the girls falling to the ground having their hair pulled.

There are students wearing uniforms from a number of schools crowding around, cheering and encouraging the girls to fight.

Boys appear to be very vocal in the crowd, urging the girls to fight. Towards the end girls try to separate the fighting girls.

A local who called police said the scene was confronting.

Traders on Glenferrie Rd were upset that schools were telling students to stay away from the area.

Police said they would leave the matter to be sorted out by schools. It is understood the students have been suspended.
