Ballarat Clarendon College students receive highest grammar scores in the state

Students at one of Ballarat’s most prestigious schools have once again topped the academic charts, while a small country school punched above its weight to rank among the best in the region.

Ambitious students at one of Ballarat’s top schools have the best grammar in the state, while a small country school has exceeded expectations to rank among the best in regional Victoria.

An analysis of NAPLAN results for Year 5 students revealed Ballarat Clarendon College — one of the state’s top independent schools — had the best grammar skills in the state.

The schools results for reading, writing, spelling and numeracy were all “well above” the state average.

The average score across the board for the school’s grade 5 cohort was 590.2 — the second best in the state behind Lakeside College in Pakenham.

Clarendon’s year 9 students also ranked well across the board, cracking the top five for Victorian high schools with an average scored of 669.4.

Ballarat Clarendon College principal Jen Bourke said being recognised as one of the state’s top schools was “cause for community celebration”.

“We are a proudly regional school and these results demonstrate what a thriving community like Ballarat can achieve,” she said.

“As we are an independent school, some might wonder whether these outcomes are more a reflection of our intake than the work we do.

“That’s why we’re particularly pleased with the results that have been published today about student progress. They speak directly to the efforts of our students and teachers.”

Loreto College, Ballarat Grammar, Ballarat Christian College and Daylesford Secondary College made up the rest of the five best performing high schools in the region.

Woodmans Hill Secondary College in Ballarat East was one of two schools in region to perform above the state average in numeracy.

Haddon Primary School was the second best performing primary school in the Ballarat region.

The school’s grade fives scored “well above” the state average in reading, grammar and numeracy — outperforming many of Ballarat’s esteemed private schools.

Meanwhile Mount Blowhard Primary School — a school of about 80 students — punched well above its weight to rank among one of the best schools in Ballarat.

Mount Blowhard grade fives had the second best writing skills in the Ballarat region, according to the NAPLAN results, while also ranking highly in grammar and numeracy.
