Plans for a school at the historic Fitzroy Gasworks have been revealed, to transform the industrial site into a thriving urban village with new housing and community spaces.
Building will begin on the senior campus within months, to be complete for the 2022 school year.
Images of the facade of the new high rise secondary school have been released, showing open green spaces and rooftop gardens across the length of the campus.
The high rise senior school is expected to accommodate 650 students from Fitzroy High and Collingwood College.
The school is a major part of plans to reinvigorate the industrial site.
It will include an outdoor rooftop terrace court and activity space, indoor sports courts, wood and metal workshops, an arts and performance space, digital design and tech hub and modern learning spaces.
Member for Richmond Richard Wynne said the new senior school “will revitalise the local area and ensure local students get the best quality education”.
The State Government hopes the Smith St site will become a flourishing village with housing and a school with facilities that could be used by the community.
Of the new housing, one fifth is planned to be affordable housing, while more than 8 per cent of the almost 4ha site will be built as public open space.
Locals are expected to be involved in planning to give them what they want for the neighbourhood.
The Fitzroy Gasworks school will be the seventh vertical campus built since 2017, with high rise schools also planned at Fishermans Bend and McKinnon Secondary.
High rise schools have been rolled out across inner city suburbs — including Docklands Primary, Prahran High, Richmond High and South Melbourne Primary — in recent years to cope with minimal space in built up areas.
Education minister James Merlino said the new campus was an example of the building boom with 100 new schools to be open by 2026.
“We are building a world-class education system to make sure that every child, no matter where they live, can make the most out of school and get the best start in life,” he said.
Watpac Construction has been given the contract to build the new campus.
