A private school department head has been charged with child sex offences on campus grounds.

Newhaven College staffer Kirk Skinner, 59, faced Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court over allegations of abusing a child on November 11 last year.

The next day, he was charged by police.

They include one count of intentionally sexually touching a child under the age of 16, and causing the child to intentionally sexually touch themselves.

It’s understood the charges relate to alleged offences committed on school grounds.

The matter was adjourned to May 14.

The school community was sent a letter in November notifying families that a member of staff had been “temporarily stood down from their employment, pending an investigation into alleged misconduct which, if substantiated, would be in breach of the school’s policies and procedures”.

Newhaven College principal Gea Lovell told the Herald Sun that the matter was “part of an ongoing police investigation”.

Despite leading the music department, Skinner is not a registered teacher.

He did not respond to inquiries from the Herald Sun.
