An elite college in Melboourne is set to launch the state’s first online private school.

Haileybury College has applied to open a virtual school for students from year 5 to year 12.

The proposed school, known as Haileybury Pangea, is yet to be approved by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority.

The school has been advertised as a “uniquely rewarding education experience”.

“Haileybury Pangea is an online learning community in which intellectually passionate students benefit from unparalleled individual attention and brilliant teachers,” the website said.

“Our brilliant teachers leverage the advantages of online learning to deliver rigorous academics based on the Australian curriculum and Australian accreditation, enabling access to an extraordinary range of post-secondary pathways in Australia and globally.”

Haileybury College charges more than $34,000 for year 12 but it’s understood the online school would be priced lower than its face-to-face model. It is not yet known how much parents will fork out.

More than 20 VCE subjects will be offered and single subject VCE courses will run over two semesters and be available for year 10 to 12 students.

Students can expect two to three live lessons per week per subject and self-paced learning time per subject each week.

The online platform will allow for a “high degree” of interactivity, voice usage, chat, polling and other interactive functionality, the website stated.

No textbooks are required, only a computer with a webcam, Windows 10 or the latest version of Mac OS.

Parents have been encouraged to register their interest with the school set to open next year.

Haileybury has four sites in Melbourne including in Keysborough, Berwick, Brighton and the CBD.

Haileybury Girls College topped the state for VCE results last year, with a median study score of 37 out of 50.
