Best high school in every local government area revealed

A ranking of the top high schools across Melbourne LGAs has yielded surprising results, with some public schools outperforming their private rivals.

The top high schools in every Melbourne local government area have been named, with many government schools in the suburbs outperforming ­private campuses that charge big fees.

The Better Education analysis of 2020 VCE and other academic outcomes shows government schools in Stonnington, Wyndham, ­Melbourne and Casey all received a perfect score of 100, showing they are the state’s best performers.

In Stonnington, selective high school Melbourne High School (100) outperformed other independent local schools, including Korowa Anglican Girls’ School (99), Lauriston Girls’ School, Armadale (99), St Kevin’s College, Toorak (99) and St Catherine’s School, Toorak (98).

The website is run independently and describes its aim as providing “informative and comparative school results, ­including school rankings or ratings and lists of best performing schools, to parents wanting to make ­choices about schooling for their children”.

In Casey, selective government secondary school Nossal High School, Berwick (100), also topped the list, while independent school St Margaret’s School, Berwick scored 98.

In Boroondara, fees buy ­results with 14 out of 19 private schools scoring between 99 and 93.

Whitehorse’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Burwood scored 100, while state secondary school Box Hill High School, which runs the Gifted Academic Potential Program (GAPP), came in second with a score of 98.

In the City of Yarra, state schools Melbourne Girls’ College (96), Princes Hill College (92) all achieved high scores, outperforming Academy of Mary Immaculate (91).

Other top government high school performers include Glen Waverley Secondary College in Monash (98), University High School, Melbourne (98), Balwyn High School, Boroondara (97) and McKinnon Secondary College, Glen Eira (96).

Melbourne High School, which accepts boys from all over greater Melbourne, from year 9 to year 12, has students sit an exam in year 8 to gain entry into the school.

Principal Tony Mordini said: “Melbourne High School is made up of a diverse and inclusive educational community for high-achieving students. The school has a proud tradition of academic excellence.

“It ensures a well-rounded education and continues to graduate civic-minded leaders who positively impact a wide range of areas including medicine, the arts, sport, STEM, government and education,” Mr Mordini said.

Mr Mordini was appointed to the school this year.

Xavier College principal William Doherty said the school had provided a distinctive Jesuit education in Kew for almost 150 years.

“Our students are at the heart of all that we do,” he said.

“Through inspiring learning experiences, we strive to form exceptional graduates who are committed to making a difference in the world.”

Siena College principal Elizabeth Hanney said: “We are so proud of our VCE and ­NAPLAN results, which reflect the incredible resilience of our students and their ­commitment to their studies during lengthy periods of remote learning.”

“Equally, it is testament to the unwavering commitment of our dedicated staff who worked with such diligence to ensure optimal learning continuity for all students,” she said
