What to know about exercising during Melbourne’s Stage 3 lockdown

Is golf and fishing allowed? Are playgrounds closed? Can we hike and ride in the Dandenongs? With exercise now one of just four reasons Melburnians are allowed to leave their homes, here’s everything to know about the rules for the next six weeks.

With exercise now one of just four reasons Melburnians are allowed to leave their homes, here’s everything you need to know about the rules around staying active over the next six weeks.

Can I travel to exercise or do I have to stay inside my local government area?

Victorians in lockdown areas - metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire - must exercise and shop as close to home as possible.

Can I sit on a park bench while I’m out for exercise?

Yes. The Department of Health and Human Services has advised that sitting in parks is acceptable while out for fresh air and exercise with one other person.

Can I meet with other people?

Melbourne residents can exercise with one other person or household members, but must maintain a distance of 1.5m. Equipment should not be shared.

Can I visit the beach?

Yes but only if you live close to a beach. Fishing, boating and surfing are also included within this criteria.

Can I go to the gym or pool?

No. All indoor sports and recreation centres, including gyms and pools, are now closed.

Can I play golf?

Golf courses will be allowed to open but social distancing must be maintained and club houses must remain closed.

Is personal training allowed?

Some outdoor sport facilities will be closed. Personal training outdoors is permitted but with a limit of two people, in addition to the instructor.

Is community sport allowed?

No. Community sport is banned in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire. People cannot travel to attend or participate in community sport in another area.

Can I take my children to a playground for exercise?

No. Outdoor playgrounds and skate parks are closed. Playing on outdoor playground equipment in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire is prohibited.

Is fishing allowed?

Yes. If you live in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, you can leave home for permitted exercise and recreation activities that are outdoors and can be done by yourself, members of your household, or with one other person. You must keep a 1.5m distance and no equipment can be shared. This includes, fishing, boating, surfing, recreational driving, learning to drive, or reading in a park.
