VCE 2020: All your special consideration questions answered

Special consideration will now be offered to all VCE students studying amid coronavirus chaos, with each student’s individual circumstances considered. But how will the program work?

Big changes for Victorian VCE students

Who will be eligible for special consideration?

All 2020 VCE students.

How does the new VCE special consideration program differ to last year?

Under the new announcement, every Victorian student will be assessed under the ‘Consideration of Educational Disadvantage’ process to determine the personal impact of the pandemic on their results. Previously, any student could make an application for special consideration and be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What impacts will be considered?

Anything linked to the pandemic that adversely affected their results. That could include mental health, school closures, issues with remote learning, long absences, personal health and increased family responsibilities.

What will be assessed?

Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) will look at students’ exam results, what teachers expected them to achieve before COVID-19, their school assessments before remote learning, the General Achievement Test and any available statistical analysis.

How will it work?

Schools will provide information to VCAA. This could include information on students’ performance before and after the pandemic. It’s expected teachers will have to undertake additional work in term 4 to support these assessments, with Education Minister James Merlino flagging greater assistance for staff.

How could it affect students’ results?

Students considered adversely impacted could have that reflected in their subject study scores, which could then impact how they fall compared to their classmates in the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

When will VCE students get their study scores and ATAR?

Result dates remain unchanged. The government has committed to issuing results to students by the end of the year, and they reaffirmed that position on Friday.

When will exams be held?

Exam dates remain unchanged. VCE exams will begin the week commencing Nov 9 and finish by Dec 2. The GAT has been pushed back to Oct 7.

What has already been done to help VCE students?

VCAA has already reduced course content for unit 4, pushed back the GAT and VCE exams and extended term 4.
