'Critical' 24 hours as Melbourne's Covid cluster grows

A Melbourne cafe owner has blown up over his business being listed as a coronavirus exposure site without any prior warning from health authorities.

Port Park Cafe owner Charlie Nasr said he was open for more than an hour on Wednesday before he found out from a customer that a person with Covid-19 had visited the Port Melbourne venue.

The positive case visited on Monday, May 24, between 12.30pm and 1pm.

“A customer said, ‘You’re listed as one of the exposure sites’,” he told 3AW on Wednesday.

Mr Nasr said it wasn’t until 8am that he received communication from a health official.

“I got a phone call from a lady from the South East Public Health Unit for Monash Health and that was at about 8am … advising me that I’m an exposure site,” he said.

The cafe owner had already closed his business but not before serving customers.

“We were open and we were an exposure site but we had no idea that we were. That’s where we were a bit upset,” he said.

“I’ve had customers calling up all day panicking because I served them this morning.”

The cafe is one of 51 exposure sites listed on the Victorian Department of Health’s website as of Wednesday afternoon.

It comes after six new infections were announced earlier in the day, bringing the total number of cases in the northern suburbs cluster to 15.

Masks must now be worn in all metropolitan Melbourne indoor venues, private indoor gatherings are limited to five people and outdoor gatherings at 30.

The Department of Health has been approached for comment.
