NSW Covid updates: Gladys scraps her daily briefing as state records 1542 cases

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed she will no longer hold a daily 11am Covid briefing from Monday as the state recorded nine deaths and 1542 new Covid cases. This comes as new freedoms will kick in next week.  Read Friday's blog.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced sweeping changes to the daily Covid briefings as the state recorded nine deaths and 1542 new Covid cases.

Health staff will now provide the daily Covid update via video link, with the Premier confirming ministers would hold press conferences "on a needs basis".

"Sunday will be the last day we officially do a press conference in this way but from Monday at 11am, Health [staff] will provide a daily health update," Ms Berejiklian said.

"Myself and Minister Hazzard or any other relevant minister will present to the community on a needs basis."

The people who died included a man in his 30s from the Blue Mountains who died at Nepean Hospital.

They also included a man in his 60s from western Sydney and a man in his 70s from the city’s southern suburbs who both died at home.

There were two deaths at Liverpool Hospital, a woman in her 40s and a man in his 50s from southwestern Sydney.

Two people from western Sydney, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 80s, died at Royal North Shore Hospital and Ryde Hospital, respectively.

There was also a woman in her 50s from the central coast who died at Gosford Hospital.

“All of these individuals had underlying health conditions, three were fully vaccinated,” deputy chief health officer Marianne Gale said.

“Three had (received) one dose of a Covid vaccine, and three were unvaccinated.

“As we’ve seen today as well, a number of those nine individuals were younger people, and it’s an important reminder for everybody in the community."

There are 1156 people in hospital with Covid-19, including 207 in intensive care, with 89 of them on ventilators.
