NSW Covid: 22,577 new infections, four deaths

NSW has recorded another record day for coronavirus cases with 22,577 infections confirmed in the last 24 hour reporting period.

The figures are a mild jump from the 21,151 cases of the virus announced on New Year’s Eve as Omicron cases continue to spike.

NSW Health is also reporting the deaths of four people from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the most in a day since November 7, before the new variant arrived down under.

One was in their 60s, one was in their 70s and two were in their 80s.

One of the four were unvaccinated, one had a single vaccine dose and the remaining two were fully vaccinated.

One of the deaths was a woman in her 80s who was a resident at the Lillian Wells Nursing Home in North Parramatta, making her the second coronavirus fatality stemming from the facility’s outbreak.

The state’s hospitals are now dealing with 901 coronavirus patients, 79 of which are in intensive care.

Despite the huge amount of cases the number of hospitalisations is still nowhere near the height of the Delta outbreak, which peaked at 1268 on September 21.

The figures came from 119,278 swabs taken and Health confirmed that 93.6 per cent of the population over 16 is now fully vaccinated.

It comes as Health also warned the state’s testing capacity was “under enormous pressure” as rules change to allow only close contacts of cases and those presenting with symptoms to get tested.
