A database tracking live job vacancies after the pandemic could change how education courses are offered in Victoria.

The government hopes its real time jobs data tracker will help it fully understand the labour market and trends in 2021 as the dust settles in the wake of COVID-19.

The latest database, commissioned just before Christmas, will seek live updates to virtual job ads across the state and repeated job offers post-pandemic.

The analysis, broken down by Victorian region, will become more important than ever as the state seeks to recover from economic turmoil inflicted by the coronavirus.

Every online job vacancy, apprenticeship and traineeship will have to be fed to the State Government in weekly updates.

The data would be used to help the education department “transform Victoria’s skills and training sector so every Victorian can access high-quality training that will lead to real jobs, meet industry needs and grow economic productivity”, government documents show.

A Department of Education spokesman said the labour market analysis would be used “to decide which courses should be included on the government funded course list for TAFEs and other Registered Training Organisations and to advise training providers which skills are in demand”.

“Real-time job advertisement data allows us to ensure the training system can adapt rapidly to industry needs as the economy recovers from the pandemic,” he said.

“DET is undertaking a new procurement to ensure we are using the best available data, and getting the best value for money.”

The data would not be used for setting the primary or secondary school curriculum, but could help inform teachers of the jobs in demand for their students.

The data reports are sent to training providers and will be published online in January.

The Victorian Government is seeking a contractor to create its latest jobs tracker, with bids to close by the end of next month.
